Like the desert sun, ABRI’s music seems to come from all corners;
a blended heat that moves the core. With a name that illustrates ABRI’s
candid approach - ‘ABRI’ can be translated to everything from ‘open’ to
‘discover’ and ‘begin’ – the Dubai-based band was born when vocalist
Hamdan Al Abri met keyboardist Julian Symes in 2005.
In live performance, ABRI’s sound is now fleshed out with the
addition of bassist Rami Lakkis and Sunchild drummer Andre Atherley.
With Rami’s intuitive bass riffs and Andre’s solid drumbeat
accompanying Julian and Hamdan’s soulful melody, the sound of ABRI
resonates throughout the region.
Dodging the conventional trend of compartmentalizing music into
‘genres’, ABRI’s music is the harmonious sound created by four
musicians with extremely varied musical backgrounds. ABRI’s vocalist,
Hamdan is a full-time Dubai resident, having been born and raised in
the emirate.
Abri has been seen performing at the Dubai Desert Rhythm
Festival, sharing the stage with Miks, Joss Stone and Kanye West. Also,
in Bahrain with Arrested Development and Fun Loving Criminals. The
band has also performed in London, receiving a great response at both
Monkey Chews in Camdan and Jazz Talent Jam in Chiswick.
The band’s single, ‘A Piece of Yourself’ won battle of the beats
on Radio 1 and the cd is now placed in the Virgin MS top 20 charts,
beating out artists such as, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Kanye West and
50 Cent.. Their album, Sunchild released in the GCC on November 1st,
2007.

Dahab Band (Acoustic Contemporary Arabic) |
|
Inspired by Sinai, a magical and sacred land, DAHAB's music can be defined
as
"acoustic ethnic rock with a 70's influence". The trio comprises of Sharif
Maghraby, (composer/lead and rhythm guitarist/backing vocals) Majid Fassi,
(composer/lead and rhythm guitars/lead vocals) and Adham Sharkawy 'the man'
on
percussion with an arabic feel. "We play by actively listening to each
other and
aspire to always create an emotional connection with the audience" - DAHAB.
'DAHAB' is a small Bedouin village in Sinai about 100km north of Sharm El
Sheikh and it is renowned as a place where musicians and artists go to
create
and improvise. 'It is a place which we all agree has given us great times,
great
friends, great passion, great music and of course a feeling of harmony,
peace
and being one with nature'. This is the essence of the band and most of
their
music has been composed in Sinai - hence the name of their first album
'Spirit
of Sinai'.
Based in Dubai, DAHAB has performed at the Dubai International Jazz
Festival,
Peanut Butter Jam, Dubai Lime Open Mic events, and have shared the stage
alongside the famous legends of Reggae, The Wailers (of Bob Marley and The
Wailers). I'd say the group has come along way since embarking on their
musical
journey back in 2004.
Being influenced by many greats such as Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Led
Zeppelin,
Eric Clapton, Bob Marley, Lenny Kravitz, Santana, Tracy Chapman and of
Arabic
origin DAHAB are due to release 'Spirit of Sinai' in January 2009.
